Aliquippa man sentenced to nearly four years for illegal firearm possession

A man from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 45 months in federal prison after being convicted of illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. The sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release.

Tyland Witherspoon, 28, received his sentence from United States District Judge William S. Stickman IV on July 28, 2025. According to information presented in court, Witherspoon was found with a Glock 23 .40 caliber pistol and Smith & Wesson .40 caliber ammunition on June 19, 2024. Witherspoon had previously been convicted of a felony, which makes it illegal under federal law for him to possess firearms or ammunition.

Upon sentencing, Judge Stickman stated: “the danger that illegal firearms present to our community and the seriousness of Witherspoon’s offense.”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Nicole A. Stockey.

Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti acknowledged the work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for their roles in the investigation. “Acting United States Attorney Rivetti commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Witherspoon.”
