Beaver Falls man sentenced to probation for theft of social security benefits

A Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania resident has been sentenced in federal court for theft of government property. Nicholas T. Grimes, 31, received a sentence of three years’ probation and seven days of intermittent confinement. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge J. Nicholas Ranjan.

Court documents revealed that after the death of a Social Security benefits recipient, Grimes began stealing the deceased individual’s retirement benefits as early as 2014. Over time, he stole approximately $216,779 by withdrawing funds from the account through ATM transactions. Grimes has been ordered to pay full restitution in the amount of $216,779 to the Social Security Administration.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci.

First Assistant United States Attorney Troy Rivetti said, “I commend the Social Security Administration – Office of the Inspector General and the United States Postal Inspection Service for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Grimes.”
