A federal grand jury has indicted Sheldon Mays, 25, of New Jersey, for possession of a weapon while incarcerated at the Schuylkill Federal Correctional Facility. The announcement was made by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
According to Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus, “the indictment alleges that on July 27, 2024, Mays, an inmate at the Schuylkill Federal Correctional Facility, possessed a sharpened plastic weapon with a cloth handle.”
The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Sarah R. Lloyd is prosecuting.
If convicted under federal law for this offense, Mays faces up to five years in prison, supervised release after imprisonment, and a fine. Sentencing will be determined by a judge based on federal statutes and sentencing guidelines.
Officials remind that indictments are only allegations and all persons charged are presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.
