Bernard Johnson, age 48, of Harrisburg, was sentenced on April 14 to 15 years in prison for drug trafficking and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

The sentencing follows two separate incidents involving Johnson. The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address repeat drug offenses and illegal firearm possession in the region.

United States Attorney Brian D. Miller said police first responded to Johnson’s apartment on November 23, 2017, after reports of a burglary. While no burglars were found, officers discovered cocaine, crack cocaine, and a firearm inside the apartment. Additional drugs were found in Johnson’s car when he returned home.

While awaiting trial for that offense, Johnson was involved in another incident on August 17, 2018. Police responded to reports that he was pointing a gun at someone at a Susquehanna Township home. As police arrived, Johnson fled in his truck leading officers on a chase through Harrisburg streets. During the pursuit, he threw a handgun with a silencer out of his vehicle before being arrested; more cocaine intended for distribution was later found in his truck.

Johnson pleaded guilty on July 10, 2025 to three counts of drug trafficking and two counts of possessing firearms as a felon. When imposing sentence, United States District Judge Jennifer P. Wilson cited his long criminal history with previous convictions related to drugs and weapons both at state and federal levels. Judge Wilson also mentioned “a significant risk of recidivism and a need to protect the public.”

The investigation involved multiple agencies including the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; West Shore Regional Police Department; Harrisburg Bureau of Police; and Susquehanna Township Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Michael Consiglio, Steven Dukes, and Carlo Marchioli prosecuted the case.
