A Johnstown, Pennsylvania resident, Jonathan Brunson, was sentenced on Apr. 8 to 144 months in federal prison and five years of supervised release for conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute multiple drugs. United States Attorney Troy Rivetti announced the sentence, which was imposed by United States District Judge Marilyn J. Horan.

Brunson, age 54, was convicted of conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute significant quantities of methamphetamine, crack cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine between April 2019 and July 2021. According to information presented in court, Brunson obtained these substances as part of a larger operation that involved distribution within the Western District of Pennsylvania.

During the first half of 2021, authorities intercepted Brunson on a federal wiretap obtaining quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl intended for further distribution. The investigation was conducted by a Homeland Security Task Force and included evidence showing his involvement in distributing drugs through coordinated efforts with others.

Assistant United States Attorney Maureen Sheehan-Balchon prosecuted the case. Multiple agencies participated in the investigation leading up to Brunson’s prosecution: Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Laurel Highlands Resident Agency; Homeland Security Investigations; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Internal Revenue Service–Criminal Investigation; United States Postal Inspection Service; Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General; Pennsylvania State Police; Cambria County District Attorney’s Office; Indiana County District Attorney’s Office; Cambria County Sheriff’s Office; Cambria Township Police Department; Indiana Borough Police Department; Johnstown Police Department; Upper Yoder Township Police Department; Richland Police Department; Ferndale Police Department along with other local law enforcement agencies.

The prosecution is part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative established by Executive Order 14159: Protecting the American People Against Invasion. This initiative brings together government resources across agencies to target criminal cartels and organizations involved in crimes such as drug trafficking and human smuggling both within the U.S. and internationally.
