A federal grand jury has indicted Alita Stewart, 51, of Maryland, and Hugh Berry, 41, a federal inmate, on charges related to contraband offenses at the Federal Correctional Institution-Schuylkill in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
According to United States Attorney Brian D. Miller for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the indictment alleges that on or about August 17, 2025, Stewart provided and attempted to provide Berry with a purple bundle containing a mixture or substance containing marijuana.
The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service. Assistant United States Attorney Tatum R. Wilson is prosecuting the case.
If convicted under federal law for these offenses, the maximum penalty is five years in prison, supervised release after imprisonment, and a fine. Sentencing will be determined by a judge based on federal statutes and sentencing guidelines.
“Indictments are only allegations. All persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court,” stated the press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
