United States Attorney David Metcalf announced the sentencing of two individuals from Millbourne, Pennsylvania, for election fraud offenses. MD Nurul Hasan and MD Rafikul Islam were sentenced by United States District Judge Harvey Bartle III in separate hearings.
In February, Hasan, Islam, and co-conspirator MD Munsur Ali faced a 33-count indictment related to voter fraud during Millbourne Borough’s 2021 mayoral election. The charges included conspiracy to commit voter fraud and fraudulent voter registration.
Hasan, vice president of the Millbourne Borough Council, pleaded guilty to all charges in April. He received a sentence of 36 months in prison with one year of supervised release and a $3,300 special assessment. Islam, a former council member, also pleaded guilty to his charges and was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison with similar terms for supervised release along with a $1,000 fine.
Ali is scheduled for sentencing on June 26 after pleading guilty to his involvement.
The defendants attempted to manipulate the election results through various fraudulent activities including altering voter registrations and casting illegal ballots. Despite these efforts, Hasan lost the mayoral race by approximately 165 votes to 138.
U.S. Attorney Metcalf emphasized the importance of public trust in elections: “These defendants sabotaged the democratic will of their fellow citizens… As this case shows, should we find instances of fraud, we won’t hesitate to prosecute those responsible.”
Wayne A. Jacobs from FBI Philadelphia stated that undermining electoral processes compromises public trust: “The FBI remains unwavering in our commitment to protecting the integrity of elections.”
Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer acknowledged the collaborative effort between agencies that led to these convictions: “Free and fair elections are the bedrock principle that defines American democracy.”
The investigation was conducted by the FBI and Delaware County District Attorney’s Office with prosecution led by Assistant United States Attorney Mark B. Dubnoff.
