United States Attorney David Metcalf announced the sentencing of MD Munsur Ali, a former member of the Millbourne Borough Council, to 21 months in prison for election fraud offenses. Ali will also face one year of supervised release and a $2,500 special assessment. The sentence was delivered by United States District Judge Harvey Bartle III.

Earlier this year, Ali, along with co-conspirators MD Nurul Hasan and MD Rafikul Islam, was charged in a 33-count indictment related to an attempt to manipulate the outcome of Millbourne Borough’s 2021 mayoral election. All three defendants have pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit voter fraud and fraudulent voter registration.

Hasan, who served as vice president of the Millbourne Borough Council, received a 36-month prison sentence last week. Islam, another former council member, was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison.

The scheme involved using personal information from non-residents to change voter registrations and cast fraudulent ballots in favor of Hasan during the general election. Despite these efforts, Hasan lost the mayoral race by a vote count of approximately 165 to 138.

“These defendants sabotaged the democratic will of their fellow citizens in deciding Millbourne’s next mayor,” stated U.S. Attorney Metcalf. He emphasized that his office is dedicated to maintaining electoral integrity and prosecuting those who commit fraud.

Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Philadelphia, commented on the importance of protecting elections from fraud by public officials: “The electoral process is a pillar of our democracy… The FBI remains unwavering in our commitment.”

Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer praised the collaboration between his office, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office: “Free and fair elections are the bedrock principle that defines American democracy.”

The investigation was conducted by the FBI and Delaware County District Attorney’s Office with prosecution led by Assistant United States Attorney Mark B. Dubnoff.
