Darnell Ney, a 42-year-old resident of Attica, New York, has been sentenced to 48 months in federal prison and 10 years of supervised release for failing to register as a sex offender. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Karoline Mehalchick in Scranton.

United States Attorney Brian D. Miller stated that Ney was convicted in New York in 2022 for attempted rape and criminal contempt. As part of his conviction, Ney is required to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) for twenty years. After being released from prison in New York, Ney moved to Pennsylvania without updating his registration as required by law.

Ney was arrested on February 2, 2025, by the Pennsylvania State Police in Susquehanna County for assaulting an adult woman. On July 2, 2025, he was convicted of unlawful restraint and making terroristic threats and received a sentence from the Susquehanna Court of Common Pleas ranging from 10 to 120 months’ imprisonment. Judge Mehalchick ruled that Ney’s federal sentence will begin after he completes his state sentence.

The investigation involved the United States Marshals Service, Pennsylvania State Police, Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department in Warsaw, New York, and the Wyoming County District Attorney’s Office in Warsaw. Assistant United States Attorney Tatum R. Wilson prosecuted the case.
