Kysime Brown, a 21-year-old from Philadelphia, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his involvement in a violent armed carjacking. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Paul S. Diamond and includes five years of supervised release and an order to pay $42,909 in restitution.
Brown was indicted in August 2023 on charges of carjacking and using, carrying, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. He pleaded guilty to both counts on March 12, 2024.
According to court documents and Brown’s own admission, the incident took place in the early morning hours of July 11, 2023. Brown and two accomplices approached a 26-year-old man who had just parked near his home in Northeast Philadelphia. The group pointed semiautomatic pistols at the victim at close range before pistol-whipping him, stealing his cell phone, and taking off with his Dodge Charger.
Philadelphia police located the stolen vehicle shortly after the carjacking. As Brown and his co-defendants attempted to evade officers, they crashed into another vehicle and struck a pole on Castor Avenue. The stolen car caught fire and was destroyed. Police apprehended all three suspects at the scene.
Brown’s co-defendants, Emmanuel Sia and Leevah Mills, also pleaded guilty. Mills received a sentence of more than 11 years in prison last September. Sia is scheduled for sentencing on October 16.
The investigation was conducted by the Philadelphia Police Department and the FBI. Assistant United States Attorney Thomas M. Zaleski prosecuted the case.
United States Attorney David Metcalf stated: “The defendant was charged by indictment in August 2023 with one count of carjacking and one count of using, carrying, and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.”
A note from officials indicated that posting this press release was delayed due to the federal government shutdown from October 1 to November 12, 2025.
